ARTIST STATEMENT - BFA PORTFOLIO

My family’s ties to Exxon go back four generations. A short yet impactful history of laborers, diehard loyalists, and investment has culminated in the leather seated, chevy suburban childhood I took for the norm. Though I now call New Orleans home and bike more often than I drive, the ethereal twinkling lights and brightly burning gas flares along I-10 remain a fraught nocturnal magic on the drive to Houston.

Oil glutted, Texas maximalism was impressed upon me to be a source of “culture” and pride. Using successively larger vehicles as rugged pastime, my childhood was blind to the environmental degradation caused by fuel consumption. Presently I fight against the oil and gas industry and the chokehold it has on our lives. This body of work, painted for my BFA thesis between 2019 and 2020,  helped me to process my blindness to industry and reconcile with it’s impacts.
