Hands of plenty
3 Reclaimed Textile Wind Activated Sculptures, Black Rock City, 2023
This installation was created from reclaimed lightweight fabrics and suspended as a wind funnel during the 2023 Burning Man.
The work is now highly ironic because I fractured my hand the day before it was installed.
The hand motif additionally came to represent the entitlement, mass consumption and environmental degradation which I witnessed during these 12 deeply challenging and mud filled days on “the playa”. Having created our costumes, shade structure, and throws with reclaimed materials and slow intentional processes I was deeply disappointed by the fast fashion, trash production, and soundscape of the current day Burning Man Experience which seems to be a far cry from it’s past renditions.
Sculpture shortened to one of 3 flags due to assembly challenges (installing with broken hand)
Testing the flags on the beach at Fort Pickens National Seashore, Florida
First clown suit and makeshift splint.
X - Ray taken in the Burning Man Triage Tent. A surreal medical experience!
